Frequently Asked Questions

About the Artist

I would like to learn about Malevich. Which publications do you recommend to begin to understand Malevich and his works?

There are a number of excellent publications about Malevich. However, for introductions to the artist, we recommend Charlotte Douglas’ Kazimir Malevich (New York: Harry N Abrams; and London: Thames and Hudson, 1994) and Gilles Néret’s Malevich (Köln: Taschen GmbH, 2013). Please see our selected bibliography for further study.

Authentication

I have a work that I suspect is by Malevich, but I have some doubt about the authenticity of the work. Would you be able to have a look at it and advise me?

The Society is a purely academic organization, established for the pursuit and promotion of academic art historical scholarship on Kazimir Malevich. The Society does not authenticate, comment upon, purchase, or archive works of art. Unfortunately, therefore, we cannot help you in this respect.

Copyright

I would like to request permission to reproduce one of Malevich’s works. How may I submit a request?

All works by Malevich are in the public domain and you do not need any permission to reproduce them. Permissions are only required if a given photograph of his works comes from a museum, gallery, or from an identifiable photographer. In this case you should approach the relevant individual or institution for permission to use the photograph.

Does The Malevich Society hold the copyright to the content of the English language publication Kazimir Malevich: Letters, Documents, Memoirs, Criticism: Volumes 1 & 2 (London: Tate Publishing, 2015)?

Yes, the Society holds the copyright to the content of this publication, including all text, footnotes, annotations, index, graphics, illustrations, designs and layouts.

If you wish to reprint or reproduce any parts of the aforementioned content, please complete and submit the permission request form found here to info@malevichsociety.org. Please note that permission has not been granted until this form is countersigned by a Malevich Society representative and returned to you.

Grant Applications

What types of grants are awarded?

The Society offers research and publication grants.

When is the deadline?

The deadline for each year’s application cycle is September 30th. Awards are announced early in the following year. Decisions concerning awards are made by the Society’s Board of Directors.

Who can apply?

The Society welcomes applications from scholars of any nationality. PhD candidates whose dissertation topics have been accepted by their institutions may apply for support after completing at least one year of their dissertation research.

Proposed projects should increase the understanding of Malevich and his work, or augment historical, biographical, or artistic information about Malevich and/or his artistic legacy. The Society also supports translations and the publication of relevant texts.

Can practicing artists or producers of creative projects apply for a grant?

Unfortunately, the Society does not grant awards to practicing artists or for creative projects. If you are interested in an art historical research grant or an art historical publication grant, please see our Grant Procedures page for further information.

If your question is not addressed here, please contact the Society at info@malevichsociety.org for further assistance.
